YEAR - 1986

Family Welfare Programme Committee was instituted in February 1986 to create hygiene awareness among slum-dwellers. In the course of the year the Academy instituted many more sub-committees to promote its various activities. Presently there are 11 committees, each headed by a politician or celebrity. These may be briefly mentioned as Committees for National Integration, Family Welfare, Sports, Prevention of Drug Addiction, Free Legal Aid, Afforestation, Literacy, Co-ordination and Culture.

During this year the Academy distributed free books to needy students in Bombay and its suburbs. About 40 medical students under the auspices of Ms. Chandrika Kenia, the then Minister of State for Education and the T.V. Star Vivek Vasvani organised camps in the Simla House slum area of the city. The Academy also instituted an All-india Best Actress Award in memory of Smita Patil, to be annually awarded at the Annual Function of the Academy. The second such function was organised at "Oberoi Towers" on September 19,

with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Mr. S. B. Chavan as the Chief Guest. Literary Cash Awards for "Assam Ek Bhuchal," Raosaheb Kasbe for "Ambedkar ani Marx" and Gangaram Samart for "Sindhi Survir" were presented on this occassion. An award for the Best Sportsman of the year was also instituted.
